Yard care is a big consideration for many homeowners. Real grass is high maintenance, expensive to water and even more expensive to replace when it burns or damages as a result of bad weather or pests. As an alternative, artificial grass may be perfect for some homeowners. Below are some reasons for and against turf.

For: No Maintenance: Artificial grass does not need mowing, edging, sod replacement, seeding, or watering. Once you lay it down your done. You will need to vacuum from time to time.

Against: Initial Expense: Prices for turf can range from $8-14 dollars per square foot. You can find sales and deals, but, as the saying goes, "You get what you pay for!". The upside is you won't need to re-sod or re-seed it.

For: Long-term Durability: "The life expectancy of artificial turf can be upwards of 25 years," according to Gardenista, "making it a less costly alternative to real turf over its life span."

Against: It May Break Rules: If your home is located within a Homeowner's Association (HOA), it may not be allowed. be sure to check the Rules for your homeowner's Association. Over time, turf is gaining popularity, which is convincing more HOA's to approve its use. Be sure to get permission first. You don't want to make such a large investment to have to replace with natural grass.

For: It's Eco-Friendly: The water savings element is a huge factor without sacrificing the greener healthier look. Some manufactures of artificial grass even use recycled materials, such as old tires and plastic bottles.

Against: It's Not Biodegradable: Artificial grass will eventually end up in a landfill.

Pro: It's Pet Friendly: "The good news is that pet waste won't negatively impact your artificial grass, and turf is easy to clean," says Purchase green, a manufacturer. There are also specific types of turn that are designed for pets available to view on their website.

Against: It's Hot: "Real grass has a cooling effect when the air temperature is high. this is not the case with artificial grass, and in some instances, it may become hotter than the air and can make the surrounding air feel hotter.

For: It Looks Great All Year: If you live in an area where the lawn in dormant in the winter months, your lush and green lawn will stand out in the neighborhood!
